Many parents prefer to home school their children due to a number of reasons. Homeschooling, also known as home based learning is where children are educated from home rather than in public or private education institutions. In this method of learning, parents have the overall responsibility of determining what their children learn. Homeschooling is becoming a popular mode of learning due to a variety of reasons.
In public and private schools, teachers, no matter how good they are, cannot give maximum attention to each child. Some teachers only pay attention to a child when their grades drop or if they are faced with a situation. On the other hand, homeschooling devotes 100% of learning time to individual children. With homeschooling, parents and tutors are able to adequately understand the child, know their strengths and weaknesses and come up with effective teaching methods.
In public and private schools, what to teach, when to teach and what grade to teach it at is usually already specified. Homeschooling gives parents the freedom to choose what to teach their children and when to teach them. This enables parent to incorporate their child’s interest in the curriculum and also make the best possible learning schedule for their children. E.g. the child can be taught in the morning and partake outdoor activities in the afternoon. This makes homeschooling convenient to both the child and parent.
Strengthens family relationships
Surveys have shown that most parents have little understanding of their children more so those in boarding schools. Homeschooling gives parents and children adequate time to get to know each other thus building personal working relationships. By understanding each other, they are able to communicate effectively without fear. Homeschooling is therefore advantageous as it leads to stable families and good coexistence between parents and children.
Learning at child’s pace
In homeschooling, children are not time bound in terms of completing given syllabus within a given time period. Children are able to learn at their own pace and this ensures they fully understand a given subject or topic before they move to another subject area. Homeschooling is highly recommended especially to slow learners as they have more time to learn, practice and understand concepts. To fast learners homeschooling gives them the opportunity to learn other things that in a classroom scenario would be considered to be ‘beyond their level’.
Public and private schools have been criticized for imparting negative values to children. Through peer criticism and influence, children learn negative values including smoking, alcohol intake, underage sexual relationships etc. On the contrary, homeschooling imparts positive values to children and it is unlikely for children to have negative peer influences as they spend most of their time with adults.
Eliminating time wastages
Homeschooling eliminates time wastages that are associated with public and private schools. In these schools, time is wasted in; time spent going to school, queuing in lines for meals and other activities, breaks, weekends and holidays. In homeschooling, there is little time wastage as children can be taught on holidays and weekends.
